A Manchester suburb is hoping to be twinned with Paris after launching it's own version of the French capital's most famous landmark.
Harpurhey, once named the most deprived neighbourhood in Britain, has renamed a 100-year-old chimney as the H'Eiffel Tower, reports the Daily Telegraph.
Local officials are so confident of Harpurhey's similarities with Paris they have proposed a formal twinning agreement between the two.
The mayor of Paris has even been invited to the official opening of the H'Eiffel Tower, which dominates the new Manchester College building following the £9 million transformation of a neglected Edwardian bathhouse.
Harpurhey does have claims to fame. It is the birthplace of Clockwork Orange author Anthony Burgess and home of Bernard Manning's Embassy Club.
Pat Karney, councillor for Harpurhey, said: "I think Parisians would recognise themselves in Harpurhey people. Like them, we are proud of our area and aspirational about our place in the world.
"We are also very romantic - in the summer, Rochdale Road is like the Champs d'Elysees."
Local residents were not quite so enthusiastic. One, writing on the Manchester Evening News website, said: "You've stuck a lightbulb on top of Harpuhey Baths. Silk purse and sows ear springs to mind."
