The high art of kite photography

A Dutch photographer has carved out a new niche for himself - after mastering the art of taking pictures from a kite.

Eric Kieboom's unusual technique has enabled him to take some unique images of his native Holland, including ice skaters on a lake, a 121ft-high climbing wall and the world's longest breakfast table.

Mr Kieboom, 48, a lawyer who lives near Groningen, bases his hobby on the first aerial kite pictures taken in the 1800s.

But instead of old-fashioned box kites he uses lightweight materials such as aluminium tubing to build bespoke camera rigs that weigh just 485 grams. The rig is attached halfway up the line as it is more stable.

With his first experiments Eric had to rely on guesswork as to what the camera was seeing. Now he can view what his eye in the sky is seeing on a small screen back on the ground. A motor lets him rotate the camera 360 degrees and he takes the picture with a remote button.

He said: "When it comes to choosing subjects, I'm still learning what works and what doesn't. Abstracts can be nice, especially if the viewer has no idea of scale. Long sweeping lines in roads, canals and other landscape features can be interesting, too.

"I've started shooting more human activities lately, like scouting jamborees, the longest breakfast table in the world (over a kilometre long and 3,500 people sitting at it), a lone climber on a huge climbing tower and a group of small sailing boats.

"One of my favourites is the people ice skating. Shot on a beautiful winter day, slightly freezing weather with hundreds, maybe even thousands of people skating on the ice, all in a good mood. Well worth the cold feet."
