Technicolour truck crash causes chaos

US workers faced a huge clean up job after a lorry spilled its cargo of printer cartridges all over a motorway.

Motorists were met with the multi-coloured aftermath after the vehicle turned-over on the Interstate 95 exit ramp at Peabody, Massachusetts.

And the impromptu paint job meant that a 500ft section of the road had to be completely repaved to get rid of mess.

Workers had initially tried to remove the industrial ink by using sand to soak it and then sweeping it away but this failed.

Concern that rain would push the ink into storm drains and contaminate wetlands saw the highway ground down and repaved.

Joe Ferson, a spokesman for the state Department of Environmental Protection, said the truck was carrying about 7.5 tonnes of red, yellow, and blue ink cartridges meant for a newspaper company in Portland, Maine.

Several hundred gallons of ink splattered onto the road and workers donned protective gear to avoid skin contact, he said.

No other vehicles were involved and the truck's driver was not injured.
