Chinese surgeons have removed a giant tumour from the back of a Chinese teenager.
The 18.7kg (41lbs) growth, which took five hours to remove, has been slowly expanding on 15-year-old Qiu Sheng since birth.
Qiu Erjin, Qiu Sheng's father, said: "When he was only three months old, we found he had two bean-sized tumours on his waist. Doctors said it's not a problem, and the tumours could disappear themselves in the future.
"However, the beans grew bigger and bigger, from the size of a peach to the size of a coconut, and finally became a sandbag on his back."
Qiu Sheng had problems sleeping, his clothes wouldn't fit and in school he became a target for bullies.
Doctor Huang Yunchao from the Yunnan Provincial Tumor Hospital, where the tumour was removed, said: "It's hard to imagine how he could bear such a heavy tumour on his back for all these years.
"The tumour even grows into his chest cavity, and pushed aside his right blade bone,"
"He needs some time to find his balance again, as he suddenly lost a third of his body weight,".
Doctor Huang said the parents should have taken Qiu to have the surgery when he was born. "It would be a very small surgery at its earliest stage, and the cost would be very little."
