Bookies Ladbrokes have agreed to pay out to punters who bet that Ken Clarke would fall asleep during the Chancellor's budget speech.
TV footage and Labour leader Ed Miliband both indicated the Justice Secretary had nodded off while George Osborne was speaking.
A Conservative official denied he had dropped off but Ladbrokes still paid out a four figure sum to around 50 punters at 16/1 odds.
"Ed says he caught Ken napping, which is good enough evidence for us," said a spokesman. "We've paid out and we congratulate those who had the foresight to be on him."
Mr Miliband said the Chancellor's growth strategy had proved too much for 70-year-old Mr Clarke and had sent him to sleep.
Talking about the budget measures announced by the Chancellor, he said: "There is little reason that they will make the difference to growth we need.
"Indeed the Justice Secretary fell asleep during the Chancellor's speech, his growth strategy was so compelling."
A spokesman for Mr Clarke dismissed the allegation, saying: "Of course he didn't fall asleep."
