MOM HAPPY HER 10-YEAR-OLD DAUGHTER GAVE BIRTH

A 10-year-old girl gave birth to a newborn in Spain and her mother doesn't understand why the world is fussing about it.

The baby was born last week in the city of Jerez de la Frontera whose parents, a 10-year-old girl and a 13-year-old boy, are of Romanian origin. According to Spanish newspapers, the 10-year-old mother moved to Spain three weeks ago before giving birth in a public hospital last week.

Medical staffers who treated the girl said they were told by her mother that giving birth at such a young age is common in their country.

Later it was reported that the girl and her mother are Romanian Gypsies, or Roma, whose customs allow girls to marry young even though that's against the law in Romania.

"That's the way we get married," the girl's mother told reporters Tuesday outside their apartment building.

The mother also said her daughter and her new grandchild will remain in Spain because the relationship with the child's father, a 13-year-old boy, has ended. He currently lives in Romania.

Spanish social welfare authorities are determining whether the family can provide for the newborn baby.
